In the Wind with Ira Black

Two elderly boaters, Bud and Bob, had been boating buddies all of their lives. When it became clear that Buira new headshot.jpgd was dying, Bob visited his friend every day. One day, Bob said, “Bud, we’ve both loved boating all our lives. We boated all during grammar school, high school and college. And then we continued boating beyond that. Please do me one favor -- when you get to heaven, somehow you have to let me know if there is boating up there.

Bud looked up at Bob from his deathbed. “Bob, you’ve been my best friend for many years. If it’s at all possible, I’ll do this favor for you.”

Elf Launch

By Wendy GilbertElf Launch 1

The boat’s diminutive name belies the mammoth effort behind its ceremonial re-launch on a brilliant afternoon last month in Rock Hall, MD. Rick Carrion was elated as he sprinkled champagne on Elf and watched her kiss the water 120 years to the day after her first launch.

Spearheading a project of historical significance is especially important to this former environmental science teacher. According to the research he’s been able to uncover on Elf, his cutter sloop is quite probably the oldest racing yacht in the world. Rick acquired the then dilapidated boat more than three decades ago and his heart has been entrenched firmly in Elf ever since.

In order to make his dreams of racing the old yacht again come true, Rick founded the Classic Yacht Restoration Guild CYRG, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of traditional watercraft, both power and sail. Elf is the organization’s flagship and is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as the Cecil County Historic Register.
